Glaucoma Diagnosis—The Role of Optic Nerve Examination
نویسنده
چکیده
Glaucoma is a chronic progressive disease that, left untreated, can lead to blindness. Glaucoma represents a range of conditions in which the flow of aqueous humor in the eye is blocked, causing an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP). Impaired blood flow to the optic disc may also cause glaucoma, even without an abnormally high IOP. Even with careful monitoring and lowering of IOP, approximately 25% of patients lose their sight. Consequently, glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide.

Evaluating Optic Nerve Damage: Pearls and Pitfalls
Primary open-angle glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy involving loss of retinal ganglion cells and their axons at the level of the optic nerve head. This change manifests as thinning and excavation of the neural tissues and nerve fiber layer. Therefore, it has long been known that the structural appearance of the optic nerve head is paramount to both glaucoma diagnosis and to the detect...
متن کاملThe Role of Ocular Coherence Tomography in Glaucoma Diagnosis and Management
Glaucoma is a chronic slowly progressive neuropathy of the optic nerve and presents a different challenge. Screening tests generate a large number of false positives and frequently miss early cases. Recent large scale studies have shown that the mean intraocular pressure (IOP) at diagnosis is around 20 mm Hg making it a very poor screening tool1,2. Linking structural changes on the optic nerve ...

Purpose: To report a case of peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitation (choroidal schisis) and optic pit in a case of high myopia and open-angle glaucoma. Case report: A 30-year-old high myopic man was referred to our clinic for presumed peripapillary choroidal tumors. In funduscopy, there were two yellow-orange and slightly elevated peripapillary lesions in both eyes with indistinct margins. A s...

Objectives In this study, we investigated the patients who were referred to our clinic with a prediagnosis of glaucoma based on retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) defects on optic coherence tomography (OCT) but were determined to have nonglaucomatous RNLF defects upon detailed examination. Materials and Methods The ophthalmic examination notes, OCT images, Heidelberg retinal tomography (HRT) II...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Optic Nerve Head in Glaucoma.
Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy leading to changes in the intrapaillary and parapaillary regions of the optic disk. Despite technological advances, clinical identification of optic nerve head characteristics remains the first step in diagnosis. Careful examination of the disk parameters including size, shape, neuroretinal rim shape and pallor; size of the optic cup in relation to the area of th...
